What is an Optometrist?

Optometrists, commonly called eye doctors, are healthcare professionals who provide primary vision care ranging from sight testing and correction to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of vision changes. An optometrist is not a medical doctor, but has completed pre-professional undergraduate education in a college or university and four years of professional education at a college of optometry, leading to the doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree. Some optometrists complete an optional residency in a specific area of practice. They are licensed to practice optometry in a particular state, which primarily involves performing eye exams and vision tests, prescribing and dispensing corrective lenses, detecting certain eye abnormalities, and prescribing medications for certain eye diseases.

Optometrists are often the first doctor to detect and diagnose certain conditions or abnormalities of the eye and where appropriate will prescribe treatment for these conditions. When appropriate they will refer patients to ophthalmologists, medical doctors for the eye, for further evaluation and treatment.
